Storytelling
has been taken to a higher art form. This delightful, poignant,
at times sad yet overall positive story of a boy and his mentor,
a retired sea captain, teaches life lessons throughout.
From the book: “He had a sextant in his
hand, and he stood over fifty yards above me on the promontory which
formed the end of our dead end street. He looked for all the world
like the Ancient Mariner described by Samuel Taylor Coleridge as
having a sparkling eye and flowing silver beard. He was over six
feet tall with silver hair everywhere, including a well-trimmed
beard which formed a line from his sideburns along his jaw to end
up wrapping itself around his chin and mouth like a knot holding
his face together. Boat sneakers, bell-bottomed trousers, a white
sailor’s jersey with open collar, and a yacht club cap with
black brim. He would become the most important person in my life
over the next ten years.”
The relationship creates an adventure when the
opportunity to convert a small rowboat into a sailboat presents
itself to this creative team of an old man of the sea, and a young
boy discovering the world.
The life lessons learned in this nautical tale
are significant and couldn’t be more appropriate to the challenges
we face in the new millennium. The young boy faces physical abuse
daily, both on the playgrounds and at home. Suicide of a significant
elder and learning how to ‘fit in’ without giving up
who you are, provides lessons on overcoming pain yet not losing
optimism.
The patience of the captain, and the focus on the
building together of a sailboat, builds pride in both. Yet, the
development of compassion, discipline, and caring come to each while
they labor and learn together.
The youthful enthusiasms of the boy lead to some
enjoyable moments of mischief and even his ‘school marm’
comes to enjoy her ‘rapscallion’.
The decade of the ‘50’s provides a
great background for this story of a boy coming into adulthood.
It is, like all of our stories about our own ‘coming of age’,
insightful, painful, fun and exhilarating all at once.
Based loosely on the experiences of the author
growing up in Mystic it has the flavor of history, yet the pleasure
of fiction. From the first page, where we meet the captain, to the
last where the young boy, grown into a young man, says goodbye to
him, this is a first rate story. And one you will not soon forget.
